Due to the overwhelming generosity of friends and family we reached our £1000 target with 4 weeks to go. We have increased our goal to a stretch target of £1500. Thank you to all those who have made a donation and helped us ‘blow away’ our original £1000 goal. Ray & Bill It may be hard for you to believe but Bill & I will be 50 years old this year and have decided we need to celebrate this occasion with a challenge. We have decided to cycle Lands End to John O’Groats (1000 miles approx.) unsupported in June this year.
This ride has taken on more significance now as I would like to take the opportunity to raise funds for the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) charity – specifically for research.
Many of you may remember the case, which made the news, of a lady doctor travelling to to commit suicide aided by her children. This was recently dramatized by Julie Walters in a BBC programme entitled ‘A Short Stay in Switzerland’.
This is a neurological disease which causes the death of nerve cells in the brain which affect balance and movement, vision, speech and swallowing and today there is no treatment or cure. A closely related disease - Cortico Basal Degeneration (CBD), which is part of the same charity, has reduced my Dad from an active energetic 68 year old to someone at 72 who struggles to walk, dress, speak and eat.
Bill has kindly agreed to support my chosen charity and we would be grateful for any contribution. All money raised will be donated towards research into this debilitating disease.
Many Thanks
Ray Leaver & Bill McKinley
