A message from Chief Ground Ops Angel Charlotte Fielder

Hello!   My name is Charlotte Fielder and I'm a volunteer fundraiser for Reach - Association for Children with Upper Limb Deficiency. Registered Charity Number 1134544.

I was born with a missing left hand, so I know what it's like to grow up looking visibly different from others. A few years ago I contacted Reach to see if I could help them at all.

To cut a very long story short I wrote a book for Reach called 'Shared Experiences - The experience of having and parenting children with upper limb deficiencies'. The book was written to help support parents of children with ULDs and to provide an income stream, but Reach needs more funds than the book can raise, so I set about fundraising to help pay for Reach Activity Weeks (RAW) where young people with ULDs can meet with each other and try activities they might not otherwise have a chance to try.

Limb deficiency in children can be socially isolating so these activity weeks are vital and help affected children build confidence and self esteem. With your support Reach can continue to offer children these opportunities.

One of the best things about supporting a charity is when completely out of the blue a friend contacts you and tells you they want to raise money for your charity. It’s a truly uplifting feeling.

So hold onto that lovely thought, as I want to introduce you to Michelle Phillips who has popped up from beneath the clouds and volunteered to organise a sponsored tandem parachute jump for Reach;

you want further information about the jump

please email me at charlottefielder@btinternet.com

and Michelle  at Michellej.phillips@talk21.com

and one of us I will get back to you.

A message from Chief Falling Angel Michelle Phillips

I remember my inspiration, I remember the day quite clearly, 3 January 2011. Charlotte Fielder had been honoured with a MBE by her majesty. Quite rightly so, for Charlotte is one truly amazing human being.  Right that’s it I thought! I had an urge to go do something exciting in 2011, so with Charlotte’s organisational skills and powers of persuasion – ‘REACH Out and Jump’ was born!

From my urge to throw myself out of a plane two and half miles up and Charlotte’s urge to create a truly magnificent tombola (no, really!) we created the Reach Out and Jump events in which 16 beautiful brave Falling Angels and even more beautiful and probably cleverer Ground Angels came together to do something very special – we’ve so far raised over £8,500 for the charity REACH (Association for Children with Upper Limb Deficiency. Registered Charity Number 1134544), achieved many life ambitions and made some great new friends and had the most fantastic fun together…so much so we’re doing it all over again next May 2012 – Sunday 6 12 noon.

A HUGE thank you, to all who have donated and if you have logged onto this page for the first time then a BIG hello, welcome and thank you for supporting REACH out and Jump!!!!

If you, or someone you know, have ever thought you may be interested in a tandem sky dive then this is a great way to make it happen.

You need to:

·         Be over 16 years old

·         Weigh less than 15 stone

·         Not have any medical conditions that could be affected by doing a skydive – check with your doctor if you’re unsure

·         Raise £200 cash in advance to cover the cost of your jump, then £200 more for REACH

·         Be looking forward to the most fantastic thrill of your life

----------------------------000000OOOOO00000------------------------------

Thank you for reading all the above and thank you most of all for your support.

Best Wishes

Charlotte (Ground Operations) and Michelle (Chief Falling Angel)

A little about Reach and why it needs people like the Falling Angels

extracted from www.reach.org.uk

Reach child‘Each year, there are about 60 babies born in the UK missing part of one or both arms and hands. This is not drug induced like thalidomide, perhaps the best-known cause of such abnormalities, but for a variety of congenital reasons. There has been research in to the causes but that is not our immediate concern for funding. The problem is that each year about 60 families - parents, siblings, and grandparents - are devastated by the knowledge that their child is different and will never be totally two handed.
Sixty families may seem a small number but to each of these families it is shattering and ) Reach needs funding to 'reach' these people to provide support and information as early as possible to help them get round it.

Founded by parents of these children in 1978, Reach aims to provide affected families with the opportunity to get together, share experiences and information on what to do (or not to do) and where to go for advice regarding treatment for the many manifestations of deficiency - ranging from artificial limbs, appliances or necessary surgery.

The Reach Trustee Board is composed of Reach parents who give their time voluntarily with one full time paid administrator. We need funding to ensure we can continue to offer support to our existing members, continue to ensure Doctors, Midwifes, Health Visitors and other professionals who may be involved with these families and new births are well informed and also to continue our links with the Manufacturers of Artificial Limbs.

Each year we take a group of 40- 60 children who all have hand or arm disability for a confidence building activity holiday.  Here they tackle climbing, sailing abseiling, canoeing and many other activities to help them realize just how much they can achieve despite their 'difference'.  All the helpers on this activity week are adults who themselves have a limb deficiency so there is also the opportunity to share ideas, solutions, thoughts and concerns with peers that truly understand.  We find this week is a fantastic opportunity to build their confidence and independence, as they don’t have well meaning parents or sibling to rely on for the week.  In order to make it easier for everyone to have the opportunity to attend we organize coach travel for the children.  With the ever increasing fuel costs this alone can be a huge expense.’

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
