Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. All money is going directly to GVI to support the Orphanage in Kenya which I volunteered at over Christmas and January in 2011 and returned in 2012. Also now, we are working on a new Healthcare Project which will be launched in remote Thailand in Feb 2013.
At present the funds are being directed towards setting up:
- A small clinic in Ban Nam Khem who do free health checks in the community.
- School for the disabled in Takuapa - possible art therapy, learning exercises & simple exercise
- A group who work with Burmese refugees and displaced sea gypsies - they do a lot of sex education & family planning and HIV/AIDS awareness
OVERVIEW 2012/13
My role until the launch in 2013 will be to review program resources, literature and training materials for the volunteers remotely. In addition support the staff on the ground through utilising my medical experience.
Working with both children and adults that are physically or mentally disabled or suffering from other illness or injury in the provision of rehabilitative exercises and assisting in other areas such as health and hygiene education where required. In Thailand resources for disabled and debilitated people are either extremely limited or non-existent, so my aim is to help to fill a crucial void in the provision of these simple exercises to provide these people with opportunities for stimulation and learning.
Access to healthcare varies across countries, groups and individuals and is largely influenced by social and economic conditions. As a volunteer on Healthcare projects which aim to serve many areas of public health interest, such as hygiene, water security, HIV/ Aids awareness, maternal health, and the reduction of child mortality rates. In addition I continue to fundraise for this fabulous organisation.
OVERVIEW 2011/12
Bombolulu, is Mombasa's largest slum, or informal settlement, with no access to clean water, healthcare or road access. The environment is characterised by poverty and immorality, manifested in the high prevelance of HIV / AIDS, crime, prostitution and illiteracy.
Your money will aid these under-privileged children with free education, and critically, lunch - hunger is one of the most common reasons children fail to attend government schools. In a holistic approach the centre offers counselling to children from broken or abusive homes or who are orphaned, as well as to parents. Entirely reliant on independent donors to rent small, basic classrooms, and volunteer teachers, the centre achieves remarkable results - children sponsored to go onto private mainstream education are typically within the top 10% of their class. The orphanage was set up as a charity to care for HIV / AIDS orphans, often abandoned as young babies. Children receive a secure homelife, education and medical care. This project delivers opportunities to children from disrupted homelives, supporting health and social awareness in an area with high HIV prevalence, prostitution and drug abuse, and limited access to healthcare. Volunteers not only make a direct contribution caring for and educating the children but increase the capacity of the centres to improve facilities, programmes and funding.
