Africa Overland · 31 January 2010

The Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Cape Town, is one of Africa's first specialist paediatric Hospital. We make sure that Africa's sickest children have the access to high quality healthcare they need. Together we can give the Hospital's children a second chance at childhood.

Story

We will travel through Africa from London to Cape Town via Cairo in two Toyota Land Cruisers, crossing 17 and covering 30,000 km in four months.

The vehicles will be shipped from Cape Town to London on 28th December 2009 and will arrive in England on 11th January 2010.  Our journey will commence on 31st January 2010 from Pangbourne College in Berkshire, England and we will arrive back in Cape Town on 31st May 2010.  During our overland expedition we have chosen two support charities, the Childrens Hospital Trust in Cape Town,South Africa as well as Pangbourne College in the United Kingdom.  Please click on the Just Giving icons' and this will direct you to both these worthy charities.

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital was built in 1956 and is the only stand-alone, specialist hospital in Southern Africa dedicated entirely to child health. The majority of the Hospital’s little patients are from all over South Africa, Africa and in some instances, the rest of the world. The majority of the patients are from poor and marginalised communities and a third of these sick children are under a year old. The Hospital manages approximately 250 000 patient visits each year and between 96 and 98% of patients are previously disadvantaged.

The Trust has been fundraising for the Hospital for the last 15 years and ensures its donors that 100% of funds donated go directly to the upgrading and equipping of the Hospital including the skills development of its professional staff.
