At 09:30 am Saturday 7 February 2009 Martin Deacon and an essential helper , Charlie set out to do "Do Something Funny for Money" with the 12 inch deep snow surrounding the Cotswolds village of Blockley, Gloucestershire.
The aim was simple, build a “Red Nose Igloo” and sleep in it overnight in sub-zero temperatures.
With no prior igloo building experience the tools for the task were a grey recycling bin to mould snow blocks, an old saw for cutting and shaping them and a big dose of sun, effort and guesswork.
Six hours later the igloo was complete - a huge effort from Charlie on the block production line. Amazement all round that it actually worked!
Vital statistics: Wall thickness - 350mm (14 inches), internal floor diameter - 1.8m (6 feet), snow blocks made - at least 70, heating and lighting - none!
Martin and Charlie “checked in” at the Red Nose Igloo at 11:30 pm and emerged 08:00 am. Overnight the outside temperature fell to around -5 degrees C. Happily the temperature in the igloo was a balmy -1.5 degrees C.
Worth doing for the experience and a good cause YES! Worth doing again…..?
