We provide the "extras" which really help to make our patients' lives better

Story

Updated on 17th June 2011 at 6:54 pm

An eventful day comes to a close. Punctures, lost signs and poor map reading skills have created a twisty path across the Cumbrian landscape. All are at base safely, and apart from McIntyre can look forward to two more days of heavy peddling. For McIntyre and Selby, after close to 80 miles of travel today, its a long cold column of beer and a deep massage. Selby rides tomorrow with the gang.

Keep sponsoring!

Day one is complete - well done team. 32 miles done and they are safely at a local hostel tonight. Isotonic sports lager is being infused to ready those weary limbs for tomorrow. Will Selby and McIntyre, having given them a 32 mile head start overtake them tomorrow? Why did Chris cycle 34 miles when it was only 32? Answers will have to wait. And if you cannot male the route, come to the dialysis unit and cycle a few miles on the static bikes - they are in the reception area - people did over 20 miles today, but more are needed.

The Coast to Coast Challenge

For patients who need dialysis, a holiday is a rare and precious opportunity. Here at Derby we wanted to provide as much an opportunity as possible for patients to have their important treatment in a holiday location.

We have one caravan in North Wales. Home haemodialysis patients and unit patients have all benefited. Independent and self caring patients can go there at short notice, but groups of patients with the support of staff have had a week in Wales.

We want to do more and to set up a service in the South West. Please help us to fund the caravan and equipment that is needed. More patients will benefit by having a great holiday and yet not having the hassle of finding a dialysis slot.

So onto the challenge

Renal Coast to Coast Challenge 2011

June 16th – 19th

Staff and friends of Derby Renal Unit are taking part in a coast to coast cycle challenge in June to raise funds for a dialysis caravan. We are trying to raise £50,000 pounds to fund this project and have already raised ??..

The dialysis caravan is a purpose built box van, which is equipped with 2 dialysis machines and other equipment necessary to do dialysis independently away from the hospital. We already have one of these caravans sited in North Wales at the Dinlle Caravan Park, owned by Thornley Leisure Parks. This enables our patients who are able to dialyse themselves at home normally, to go on holiday and use this facility. We also send staff to the caravan site for 2-3 weeks during the year to enable patients whom are not independent to go on holiday. We hope to site this new dialysis van somewhere in the West Country which will allow our patients to use this facility during their holiday.

The Coast to Coast or the C2C as it is more commonly known is the UK’s most popular long distance cycle route.

At 140 miles in length the route begins on the west coast of Cumbria at Whitehaven and finishes on the north east coast at Sunderland. C2C as in from the Irish Sea to the North Sea.

The route is not without some challenging terrain providing some hard climbs (the highest point being over 2,000 feet) We are planning to do this route over 4 days, a few are attempting it in 3 days!

We are also going to have our own C2C cycle challenge in the dialysis unit here in Derby. An exercise bike will be set up in our waiting area where those that haven’t joined us will have to make the distance!
