Story

Thanks for taking time to check out my Comrades '09 Fundrasing Page. As a complete glutton for punishment I'm going back to do the other half of the Comrades experience this year for the "down" run. For those of you who don't know about it Comrades is the oldest Ultra Marathon in the world. The run is run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg one year it's mostly uphill and the other it's back down towards Durban. Total distance for the down run is 90km, making it more than two marathons back to back with a cut-off of 12 hours to complete, if you miss the cut-off at the various check-points they pull you off the road and put you on the loser-bus, last year about 20% of starters ended up on it. My time last year was 9:55 and the run was truly brutal. The picture on the left here is me coming up the infamous "Polly's" 7km from the end, believe me the smile was only for the camera! Yet again I'm doing a bit of fundraising for an AIDS charity, this time to provide anti-retrovirals to people with no means to pay for them. With the improvements in these drugs HIV is becoming a more manageable disease however access to these for the poorest in the world is not what it should be, especially in areas of Kwazulu Natal where I will be running. There's Magnum of Veuve Cliquot champagne (or equally fun prize for my non-drinking friends) for the person who donates and guesses the time closest to my eventual finishing time.
