Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Sponsor me on the Fourth Plinth!

On July 28th from 9pm-10pm I occupied the Fourth Plinth of Trafalgar Square, in order to raise funds and awareness for Diabetes UK. You can watch my plinth experience on the OneandOther website at: www.oneandother.co.uk/participants/Richard

Although the event has now passed, please do donate anyway - it's all in a good cause, supporting people in the UK with diabetes.

I  volunteered to take part in Anthony Gormley's public art project involving the vacant Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London. Like 2,399 other people I was chosen at random to stand on the plinth for a whole hour, on my own, in my allotted time.

Having been struck by the urge to do something worthwhile with my hour, I settled on raising some funds for Diabetes UK (www.diabetes.org.uk) .

2009 is the 75 anniversary of Diabetes UK and is also my own 20th anniversary of having Type 1 diabetes. As well as celebrating both anniversaries through being 'publicly diabetic' in Trafalgar Square for 60 minutes, I also took the opportunity to say thanks to all those people who had chosen to sponsor me, by writing out their names on a board - and any messages they wanted me to pass on to the world.

Every three minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed as having diabetes, and to help underline that Diabetes UK provided me with some things to fling into the crowd in Trafalgar Square. My aim wasn't great, but it helped underline the point. I also kept a tally on my whiteboard to highlight how many people would have been diagnosed with diabetes during my plinth stint.

If you want to contact me, I can be emailed direct at rachapman@gmail.com

Thanks and best wishes,

Richard
