My name is Richard Orford. I am a former student at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford. I am now working as a receptionist at the college. Wearing a Superhero costume I will be completing a 26-mile marathon by treadmill, rower and bike at the college's Point4 sports centre, Venns Lane, Hereford. Sponsorship raised through my 'super human' challenge will go towards a minibus with wheelchair access for the college students.
I am registered blind but try to be as independent as possible. Life is about giving and taking and, as I have certainly taken something from the college, it's only right and proper that I give something back. No one wants to help anyone who can help themselves but won't.
To give you a bit of history, back in 2007 I was diagnosed with diabetes due to being obese. I weighed 21.5 stone. Even after the diagnosis, I still put on weight through comfort eating and went up to 22 stone. My consultant warned me that I would lose control of my diabetes if I wasn't careful but what worried me more was dying early of a heart attack. I also felt very uncomfortable.
I finally took action in September 2008 and embarked on a course of diets and exercise under expert guidance from my GP and local sports centre in my home town Durham. Over the next year I managed to get down to 15.5 stone and I am no longer on insulin. I have been told not to lose any more weight. My blood pressure and heart rates also fell although I have never suffered from high blood pressure.
Going to the gym and swimming gives me a really good feeling and is something I really love doing.
Please show your support by sponsoring me on Monday 22nd November. Any support you can give will be greatly appreciated. The event takes place between 3 and 7 pm in the Point4 Venns Lane Hereford HR 1 1DT. Please come along and cheer me on!!I
Best regards
Richard Orford
