Maggie's Centres help people adjust to living with cancer. Its pioneering support programme has been developed for patients, their carers, family and friends. Each centre is located close to an NHS hospital and they have been designed carefully and imaginatively to make sure people feel at home.

My personal message:

The beautiful pyramid of Khan Tengri is known as the 'Jewel of the Tien Shan'. It is the most sought after peak of this most northerly and remote of the great Asian mountain ranges and it was not until 1991 that the first British ascent was made.

I will be travelling to Krygyzstan in August to spend 3 weeks attempting to climb this amazing mountain. On this expedition, the technical standard of the climbing, the high altitude and the remoteness of the mountains will make it an extremely serious and committing undertaking. I have been following a rigourous training program to maximise my chances of attaining the summit. Once we reach base camp (by ex-Russian military helicopter!) I will be following a careful acclimatisation program to ensure that I give myself the best chance of success. This will involve stocking the higher camps on the mountain prior to my summit attempt following a climb high, sleep low philosophy.

By organising and undertaking this expedition I hope to raise as much money as possible for those less fortunate than myself, while pushing my own mental and physical boundaries. I plan to use this expedition as preparation for climbing Cho Oyu (the 6th highest mountain in the world) next year and finally Mount Everest in 2008. I hope you will find this worthwhile and would consider supporting Maggie's vital work. Please note that this is not a commercial expedition. My friend and I are travelling independently to Krygyzstan and do not plan to employ the services of a guide. All monies raised from this site will go directly to Maggie's to help people living with cancer. (Remember that 1 in 3 of us are likely to develop cancer at some stage in our lives).
