Story

"It’s about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It’s about Ben, it’s about Steven and Andy and Mark, it’s about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes."

After our 'Ride to Arnhem' last year, which raised nearly £3,000 for the Airborne Forces Charity, we have decided this year to raise money for Help for Heroes. I am sure you are all fully aware of the vital role this charity plays in rehabilitating and helping the young wounded and injured servicemen and women fighting in today’s conflicts. A task they do without question or large reward.

Joining Mike and I on this year’s ride will be my wife, Sharon, our 8 year old son, Ryan and long-time work and football friend, Nick. Sharon has never cycled further than is necessary and Ryan only got to grips with riding 18 months ago, so as you can appreciate it will be a challenge for both of them, not to mention me!

We are hoping to complete the 150 miles over 5 days as none of us (apart from Mike) are seasoned cyclists. Our route will take us through S’Hertogenbosch, Groesbeek and Nijmegen before arriving at Arnhem Bridge on Monday 19th July.

The weather has put our training plans on hold for the time being but I have spent plenty of time at the local bike shop finding a saddle soft enough for my backside!

We will try and keep you updated of our progress throughout the coming months, but in the meantime please find time to make a donation through this website – remember: make sure you Gift Aid your donation so that we can reclaim some of your hard earned money from the taxman!!

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Help for Heroes raises money to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country. We ask our supporters to “do their bit” to show these extraordinary young men and women that they are cared for by us.

So please dig deep and donate now.
