I visited the refuge at Zapallal for the second time in 2003 and was amazed at the changes since my first stay three years earlier. A new dormitory, a garden area, proper toilet facilities - even a shower! It's fantastic what they've been able to achieve.
Though many of the children I first met have moved on, there was one girl who recognised me in 2003 - Rachel. She told me how her brother, David had found himself a job and how he comes to the refuge once a month, not just to see his sister, but with sweets for the children and to help out at the refuge.
I can't praise the work that everyone has done at the refuge enough and what's more, it involves Peruvians themselves - some of the most generous people I've met. I enjoy every opportunity I get to give something back and hope you can help in this aim to support Project Peru and the children at Zapallal!
Ps - there's a good chance I'll be running in fancy dress again this year - in 2001, it was Speedy Gonzalez with Peruvian colours. I've got some ideas, but I'm open to suggestions, but they must be CONSPICUOUS!!! (I have only a small amount of shame)
