My story

'Robbie' the Robot at the Royal Berkshire Hospital

In late 2008, thanks to a generous legacy, the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust was able to make an initial down payment to acquire a da Vinci robot, the latest in state of the art robotic assisted surgery, nick-named 'Robbie the Robot'.

In 2010 and 2011 the second and third annual instalments were paid from charity fundraising and generous public support.  Two further annual instalments and a final payment of £365,000 are needed totalling £975,000 to ensure 'Robbie' remains at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Initially surgeons were using Robbie to perform prostate cancer operations, but 'his' use has also expanded to include kidney removal, gynaecological and colorectal operations.

'The robot offers a less painful procedure with a quicker recovery time and fewer side effects and has so far proven to be equally effective as open surgery for dealing with cancer, as well as being less likely to cause impotence or incontinence.'  Surgeon, Lt. Col. Zaheer Shah

Reading and District Hospitals Charity together with the The Royal Berks Charity are committed to raising the remaining money needed to keep the da Vinci robot in Reading.

Please give your support and keep 'Robbie' the Robot in Berkshire.
