Farleigh Hospice provides hospice care & support to people affected by life-limiting illnesses. With approximately 40% of our annual running costs funded by the local NHS, we rely on the goodwill of the local mid Essex community to contribute to the £21,271 it costs to provide our services each day.

Story

Made it!!

Day 1 - 5hrs walking

After a quick transfer from the hotel to the Machame gate we all signed the visitors log and begun the first days trekking up though rainforest and heading for machame camp and our first night under canvas.

Day 2 - 8hrs

8am start and a climb up through the cloud to Shira camp.

Day 3 - 9 hrs walking

Another early start and an up and down day for altitude acclimatisation. Up to a altitude of 4526m and lunch at the Lava tower then back down to 3965m and Barranco camp.

Day 4 - 10hrs

6.30am start and a climb up the Barranco walk. (a scramble and great fun!!) Into camp at Barafu and early to bed before summit night.

Day 5 - 14hrs

Summit night. After being woken at 10.30pm we begun our ascent to the summit at midnight. With high cross winds and temperatures down to -20c it was a long and cold walk. We reached stella point at 6.30am at an altitude of 5756m "it's not quite the top". After a further hour we made it to Uhuru peak the "roof of africa". After a few photos and a little look at the awesome scenery it was time to head down past barafu camp and onto millenium camp for the last night on the mountain.

Day 6 - 5hrs

The final walk out though the rainforest to Mweka gate and a short transfer to the pub and after a long hot shower!!!!!!

The whole trip was absolutely incredible and i would recommend it to anyone. Just glad i did all the training walks as would have struggled otherwise.

Many thanks to all that have supported me and farleigh hospice with your donations.
