Story
What is it all about?
Essentially, the 65-mile run has been created by the son of one of the soldiers who took part in D-Day on the 6th June 1944 to mark the historic 65th anniversary of that day. The operation to capture the bridge was the opening action that resulted in the freedom that we enjoy in most of Europe today. The action was depicted in the film 'The Longest Day' with John Wayne and the leader of the assault on the bridge was played by Richard Todd who took part in the actual operation in 1944. Barry Tappenden is the son of Major Howard's radio operator who sent out the famous 'success message' "Ham and Jam" to broadcast the successful capture of the strategically important bridge.
