This is a very important sponsored event for this year as it marks the launch of our 10th Anniversary Year fundraising activities.  Over the coming year we aim to raise £30,000 to fund a new development project on a tea estate in the hill country in central Sri Lanka.  Rahatungoda tea estate is home to 1,000 people including 300 children.  Every family works on the tea estate, and their small income is supplemented by market gardening.  This community is living in desperate poverty.  No household has electricity or sanitation facilities—all the community’s water needs (drinking, washing, toilet) are met by the river.

We have met with the community and are inspired by their vitality and enthusiasm and their desire to build a brighter future for themselves.  During 2008 Shining Life Children’s Trust will start working with them to provide sustainable development work including:
o basic health and nutrition training
o investment in preschools
o income generating training
o small loan credit schemes
