Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Hi, I'm Robin, a 17 year old student at Winchester College. During the summer holidays, I will help people in the slums of Mumbai by teaching the children English. I will trek to the Gangotri glacier, the source of the River Ganges and climb to the mountain Shivling’s base camp for Encephalitis society.

I am raising money for the Encephalitis society, in memory of Johnny Sutton, an old Wykehamist who died at the young age of 17. He was a very active member of the school and it was a shock to everyone to hear about his death. The Encephalitis society helps people who are affected by the disease. For any more details visit www.encephalitis.info

Mumbai is the commercial and financial capital of, yet 54% of its large population live in a slum, that’s 7.4 million people living inhuman conditions that no one in the West could imagine of living in. On top of this 200 people migrate to Mumbai everyday, most of which end up in slums. I will work with the ‘Smile Organisation’ which helps children over numerous slums in Mumbai, helping children of commercial sex workers and physically and mentally challenged children. My role is to assist an English teacher at the school.

The Gangotri glacier is one of the largest glaciers in theHimalayas. It is 20 miles long. The glacier is the source of the holy River Ganges and around the glacier there are several peaks with extremely challenging climbing routes called the Gangotri Group. Shivling is a mountain in the Gangotri Group, near the top of the Gangotri Glacier. Shivling is also a Hindu holy site; it is where the God Shiva was born. MountShivling is 6,543 metres high and because of its high altitude. I will climb to the base camp for Encephalitis society

My target is to raise £1500 for the charity and I would be so grateful for anything you donate. The money will directly go to the charity as my trip is funded by the Johnny Sutton Memorial Award.
