<p>It just so happens that the start of the Army Ornithological Society's sponsorship of the Whinchat Survey on Salisbury Plain and the Reading Half Marathon occur on 1 Apr 2012. April Fool's Day - and you can read whatever you like into that! Those that know me will understand my reasons for running on behalf of the British Trust for Ornithology - as a way of financially contributing directly to the survey and study of British bird life - and in this case specifically, of Whinchats. But the BTO is also an organisation for which I have considerable respect, in its purpose, motivation and in the dedication of its staff. In many ways I see a similar ethos to that which I have enjoyed throughout a lifetime in the Army - but without the uniform and bangs.</p>
<p>So you're not sponsoring me but you've probably been selected because you share a lot of my values and hopefully a care for the future of British birds.. </p>
