"It was 20 Years Ago Today..."
So said popular beat combo The Beatles. And way back in September 1988 I set off with four others on the final expedition for my Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award, a four day, 50 miles hike in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
...And now I've done it again!!
LATEST NEWS...
SO WE DID IT!... AND JUST WANT TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SPONSORED VICKY AND ME
We set off as the North of England was being battered by rain and although we had to cut short day one due to the weather and the time and energy spent crossing torrents of water on the moors near Ribblehead we completed the walk on Tuesday.
The plan...
Around 6th September 2008 me and my fantastic 'Director of Logistics' the very wonderful Vicky Barker...plan to retrace the route of that expedition undertaken by myself and four other intrepid young people from Chesterfield Activity Centre Duke of Edinburgh's Award Group back in 1988.
I'll be raising money for YHAs 'Breaks4Kids' scheme. This allow's financially disadvantaged children and young people opportunities to enjoy the benefits of social, recreational and educational activities at YHA centres. You can find out more at http://www.breaks4kids.co.uk/
So thanks for visiting my fundraising page... I'll post more information soon.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: YHA and it's Breaks4Kidsscheme gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me now!
Update - September 1st
Fantastic news - youve only gone and done it. We've broken over the £500 barrier!!!!! Thanks to everyone who's sponsored us...And it is an us too as Vicky has put a load of work into this before we've even set off (my round first then VJ!).
Right the kit is all packed now so roll on Saturday morning.. see you on the otherside...
Oh..and Apart from collecting about 1.50 for aschool sposored walk about 30 years ago I've never tried to raise money for charity like this Cheers everyone but if I can do it ( sorry..we..) you can - so go on think of something stupid to do and have a crack at it..
Update August 27
A few finishing touches to the route cards (working out height gained for something known as Naismiths Rule) however I realised that if you have an OS map taking up a whole table on a train full of commuters people don't sit near you..brilliant. Why didn't I know that when I lived in London....?
Looking forward to the walk..lovely part of the country where I lived for about 18 months. In fact an old colleague Angela from YHA Malham has just made the donation that takes me over £400.. with gift aid this is worth about £485!! It would be great if we hit the £500 mark which would be about 700 quid with gift aid. So cheers Anj and cheers everyone who's helped so far....

Update August 25
All looking good - and fear not I now have a new compass! Route cards are almost finalised and Vic has been working away sorting out loads of stuff. I'm really looking forward to it....
Update - August 12
Well it's all going quite well. I've had a few days in the hills and been on the bike. Just hoping that the weather in early September isn't like it's been this week. One other problem is that my compass appears to have given up the ghost and now points South when it should be pointing North - unless we've had a big switch around and no one told me..
Thanks to everyone who's sponsored me but can I say a special thanks to Jan Norton who I've never met but gets the YW4H newsletter I send out from work and sponsored me a £1 a mile fantastic stuff thanks Jan...
more soon
Roj.
