Three teenagers, three countries, two mountain ranges and one goal – ‘ Rome Is Home’
On 21st of July Dan Strang, Alex Lambert and Ed Houghton will arrive in Barcelona , equipped with Giant bikes and helmets, one spare change of kit, a few spare parts and a tent, as we will be attempting an exhausting 1000 mile cycle ride from Barcelona to Rome
From the moment we touch ground in Barcelona, we will be living on our bikes and out of our backpacks. We aim to pass over the Pyrenees and into France within the first few days (no easy challenge!). Its a gruelling mountain range, and it will be our initiation into the world of road racing. We then make our way along 400 miles of French coast. We fly past Perpignan, Marseille and Monaco, setting up tents and cooking on camp fires when the day's demanding cycle ride is over.
Our punishing schedule is sure to be a huge strain on our bodies, and this won’t be helped by forecasted high temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius during the month of our travel. Once we have pedalled through France we have to surpass the Alps , and make it into Italy. We then will have Rome clearly in our sights, but the last week is sure to be the most demanding.
Although this daily agenda of an extremely strenuous cycle schedule and a small uncomfortable sleep schedule sounds like a fantastic holiday idea, it isn’t purely for enjoyment.
When our school colleague, Alistair Ross lost his life to cancer it became all of our aims to raise all the money we could for Teenager Cancer Trust. As three ex Solihull School pupils we have been thoroughly involved in lots of events to raise funds for this charity. We are desperate to make sure that all the hard work and training that we are doing for this challenge means we can raise a substantial amount of money for the charity.
