I have decided to run my first half marathon on 9March 2014 in aid of Friends of the Beatson.  I was training for this race and, whilst running past the Beatson, I decided it would be a great way to raise some funds for such a fantastic cause.  I then started thinking about the reason I started running a few years ago.  It was all thanks to my truly inspirational boyfriend, David, who fought testicular cancer 4 years ago and who will be running with me to help drag me round this half marathon!  During his illness David continued to keep as fit as he could. He ran races shortly after his operation and subsequent treatment at the Beatson with a positive attitude and great determination.  His efforts and dedication to raising awareness about testicular cancer and funds for ‘Friends of the Beatson’ has been amazing over the past few years because he knows what valuable work it does.  My mum was also affected by breast cancer but remained strong and determined to beat this horrible disease with characteristic determination.  I admire them both so much for showing such great courage throughout their battles.  Unfortunately too many of both mine and David’s families and friends have been affected by cancer but have received exceptional service with ‘Friends of the Beatson’, who provide practical comfort and support for patients at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.  It is designed as a "retreat" for patients and a place of calm where they also provide a range of therapies to help make the lives of cancer patients better.  I am absolutely delighted that ‘Friends of the Beatson’ is also my employers chosen charity for this year.  Please help me to give back as much as I can for this great cause, in honour of all the amazing people I know that have fought with the help of this service.
