My story

Another update - Tues 18 August 2009 - we went back!

Because Gerald and I weren't able to complete our trip to the summit of Snowdon for the main charity walk in May, we went back this week, and despite heavy mist on the top, we made it! Right to the top.

Photoes available soon ... in fact they're already on facebook here at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=35592&id=1197157940&l=26c0f05118

Update 16 May 2009 - we did it!

Yes, Gerald and Simon achieved the Snowdon 500 Challenge - we have certificates and T shirts to prove it! However, due to the atrocious weather conditions in Snowdonia (hail and sleet, poor visibility, gusts of up to 70 mph) we were unable to reach the actual summit.

We walked (and scambled up) the Miner’s Walk, but the marshal at the junction of this track and the Pyg Track was telling people to walk back down the Pyg Track (and not carry on to the Lllanberis Path as planned) due to dangerous conditions at the top of Snowdon. As the tallest mountain in England and Wales claims 10 lives per year, we decided to heed his advice and clamber back down. It was frustrating, getting so close to the top, but as the amount of cloud was increasing all the time (as was the wind speed) it would have been foolhardy to continue – and there was nothing to see except clouds and mist anyway! Gerald and Simon have promised in true Terminator fashion that they’ll “be back”!

Original message:

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. It's the brainchild of Mr Gerald Edwards (70, from Sychdyn, North Wales) and has been designed by me, Simon Lakin (a younger but less fit 43, from the Wirral). Last year, Gerald and myself did the "house to house" 20+ miles walk (see www.justgiving.com/housetohouse ) to raise funds for BRPS (www.brps.org.uk). This year, we are taking part in an event called Snowdon 500 (www.snowdon500.co.uk) to raise funds for a prostate cancer charity called The Prostate Cancer Research Centre. It's a trek up Snowdon on Sat 16th May 2009 with 500 other climbers, and will be a real challenge.

More information on the route etc is available at www.snowdon500.co.uk/downloads.html

Our walk is in memory of Ron Edwards and Ronnie Hughes who passed away recently (February and March 2009). They will be sadly missed by friends and family and we hope that this walk will honour their memory.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Prostate Cancer Research Centre gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Many thanks for your support.

Gerald and Simon
