Story

Two years ago my father in law was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly he lost a bravely fought battle against this terrible illness in April, aged just 55. At no point during his illness did he feel sorry for himself, he was more concerned with his family’s welfare than his own. It’s fair to say that he was a better man than me, who whinges and whines when I’ve got a common cold – and I know I’m not alone in that!

I’m fast approaching my 43 birthday and only during my father in laws illness have I realised how lucky I am to have good health, something we all take for granted but really don’t know when it will be taken away from us.

So, as a mark of respect for him and to try and raise as much money as possible, I’ve decided to take on my biggest ever physical challenge – and I don’t mean a scrap with the missus because that’s one I’d never win!

My challenge is an extended triathlon. This is a gym based challenge as there is only me doing. I know some of you will think it’s the easy way out doing it in the gym and that’s a fair enough observation because it will be easier than doing outdoors. But if you do think it’s easy, then you’re more than welcome to join me during training and on the day!!

The triathlon consists of a half marathon, 10k on the rowing machine and 69k on the bike – this is double the distance of the triathlon I did two years ago to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. If I’m being honest I think I’m mad because this is the sort of thing I should have tried twenty years ago – not into my forties!

Anyway, you’ve heard enough from me so all I’d like to ask is if you would be kind enough to sponsor me for this event. All of the money raised is for Scunthorpe Hospital Cancer Ward (Ward 18), who my father in law had nothing but praise for because of the way all of the staff cared for him. The money will be put towards new life saving equipment for the cancer ward.

To all of you who are kind enough to sponsor me, please accept my most gracious thanks.
