We’ve been improving the lives of those who work or have worked at sea, and their families, for over 100 years. Established in 1917 as The King George's Fund for Sailors, to support the families of seafarers lost at sea during World War One, we support seafarers throughout their career and beyond.

Story

Why should seafarers be charity cases? They earn salaries, right? But the nature of globalization, commerce and shipping means that 90% of world trade is brought to us by seafarers who are still too easily exploited, exhausted and sometimes abandoned by a minority of shipowners and operators. Seafarers UK do a wonderful job at funding charities who look after seafarers who have very little time ashore, who are often strangers in a strange place and easily exploited, who work in extremely dangerous conditions at sea with a much greater chance of injury or death than any other job, who suffer disproportionate levels of depression, disability and family breakdown. Seafarers UK's funding "enables seafarers to access advice and information, adapt to life on shore, re-train and find new employment. It also improves their quality of life by helping to provide the essentials of daily living that a small pension (or none) cannot cover. Often it may be the family of a seafarer who has been injured, held hostage or who has subsequently passed-away that require assistance."
