Hey,
I'm running the Great North Run on the 20th September to raise money for Scoliosis Association UK!
My sister has a spinal condition called Scoliosis, this means that her spine is an S shape instead of being striaght.
She was diagnosed 4 years ago, and 2 years ago had major spinal surgery to try to straighten the curve. The surgeons removed one of her ribs and put 4 pins through her lower spine to hold it in place. It was a 7 hour operation, she was in intensive care for 2 days, and in hospital for a total of 12 days. When she got discharged, she had to wear a spine brace for 3 months.
2 years on, she has practically made a full recovery and will be starting uni in September. However, there is still a 30 degree curve in her spine.
Scoliosis affects 0.3% of children in the UK. A completely straight spine measures 0, and an average person has a spine measuring between 0 degrees and 7 degrees. Before the operation, my sisters spine was 60 degrees at the bottom, and 57 at the top!
Scoliosis association UK is the only independent support group for people with Scoliosis. The aims of the charity are to put people with scoliosis in touch with each other, for mutual support and to exchange experience; to provide information about scoliosis; and to inform the public about scoliosis and how to detect it early in children. So by donating, your money will be going towards supporting individuals and families affected by scoliosis!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me; and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. You don't need to sign upp to this site or anything; the only personal details you need to give are your name and e-mail address. You can pay from a paypal account or using a credit/ debit card (if you do this you will also need to enter your bank details!)
I'm sure you will appreciate that running 13 miles is going to be a massive challenge for me (as I'm rather unfit!) This is a great opportunity for you to be able to help change the lives of people with scoliosis, so please donate generously
