My story

The Temi Community in Caucasian Georgia, part of the old Soviet Empire on the Black Sea, provides a safe and loving environment principally for people with learning and physical disabilities. It was founded in 1989 by an architect, Nika Kvashali, who had come to the conclusion that conditions in the state orphanages were totally unacceptable to him. It now provides a home to some 90 people.

In the UK, for those who have disabled relatives, there is a sophisticated support system that by and large works very well. Even so, anyone in this situation still faces a significant challenge in helping a relative or bringing up a disabled child themselves.

In Georgia, none of the state support that we enjoy is available - particularly since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Additionally a Georgian's earning power is low and family finances become stretched to breaking point by disability . The result is that for many vulnerable people there is no security or support whatsoever - either from the state or their families - unless provided by communities such as Temi.

As you will see from the photographs in my blog facilities are basic - but much appreciated.

You can also access the Temi community directly through:

Hot showers have recently been installed and additional nurses employed to cater for the increasing number of children with disabilities. Whilst much has been done to help ensure future financial independence including -establishing a vineyard and a carpentry workshop - there is however a shortfall of £4000 per month against committed expenditure and no funds for additional capital developments.

To help this situation a small group of us will be running, or similar, the Paris Marathon on 5th April this year, and for which I am asking for sponsorship. All donations will be very gratefully received.

Ross.
