Story
Sometimes you don't know what you've got till it's gone. Since Dad died last year I've come to appreciate how fortunate I've been to have two wonderful parents who gave me a good start in life. Both Methodist preachers, they provided strong moral guidance and discipline, underpinned with kindness, love and support.
We never had much money, but my parents were ambitious for me academically. When I was 14 they found out that I was eligible for a Government Assisted Place to enable children from low-income homes to attend fee-paying schools. Our household income was sufficiently low for me to qualify for a full grant, and so I went to the Perse Girls School, Cambridge. This paved the way for me to get into Oxford University, which is where I took up rowing.
So I was very fortunate to have a secure family background, and a helping financial hand when it counted.
Not everybody is so lucky. I decided it was time to do something positive to help, and so I decided to row solo across the Atlantic for the Prince's Trust. I will be the only solo female competitor in this year's Atlantic Rowing Race from the Canaries to Antigua.
It's an enormous challenge - I'll be spending between 50 and 90 days alone at sea. The race starts on 27th November, so even if I set a new world record, I'll definitely be out there for my birthday (23rd December), Christmas, and New Year. I'll have to contend with big waves, bad weather, boils, blisters, and sunburn. And solitude. You can find out more about my preparations and read my regular diary updates on my website, at www.rozsavage.com. I'll have to dig deep into my reserves of mental and physical resilience. I hope that you will dig deep too, and support me in this challenge. IF 1000 GENEROUS PEOPLE SPONSOR ME £30 (i.e. 1p per mile) I'LL REACH MY TARGET. Or maybe you can afford more than £30. And maybe you know somebody else who loves the sea, sport, adventure, or helping others, who would also like to sponsor me. Spread the word! The money will go to the Prince's Trust Development Awards, which provide cash grants of between £50 and £500, backed up with one-to-one advice from a volunteer mentor, to enable young people access training, education or employment. These young people have the intiative - shouldn't they be given the opportunity? Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Prince's Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. So please sponsor me now! Roz x
