25 Marathons in 25 days - A New Challenge
August 18th 2005 - September 11th 2005. 25 Marathons in 25 days - A grand total of 655 miles!
Why?
Dan's son, Jack is profoundly deaf and he has been supporting the National Deaf Children's Society for a number of years:
"As a hearing parent of a deaf child, I rely heavily on the support and information provided by The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) and its' regional associations. Following the diagnosis of my son's profound deafness at seven months of age, the NDCS have been a primary source of information and support to both my needs and those of my son, Jack, who now, at six years of age has learnt to communicate using speech and sign language." "To me it is a challenge that has everything to make it grip people's attention. If you run for 5 minutes you get seen by 5 minutes worth of people, if you run for 5 hours a day for 25 days then maybe you can get people to stop and think." Dan met his fiancee, Victoria, while running the 54 mile Thames Meander in 2003. They have been serious runners for the last 3 years and have completed numerous races, including the gruelling Marathon des Sables, a 151 mile race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco. As a recovered alcoholic, Victoria has a very personal link to Sport against Addiction and Dan is proud to support the campaign in this challenge: "As a recovering alcoholic myself, I know just how difficult it is to ask for help. I got sober six and a half years ago and gave up smoking the following year. Even though I was very sick, both physically and mentally, I was still drinking and taking diazepam until I passed out every day. I found it really hard to finally ask for help. Now my life has changed beyond belief and running or training now gets me through the day." said Victoria Wallis Victoria will be providing vital support for Dan during the 25 days of the challenge, boosting his chances of success. How? Dan will begin his journey on 18th August 2005 with a treadmill marathon at Sweatshop at Harrods. Other runs will include the Flora London Marathon route, treadmill runs in major town centres and the Britvic Marathon of Britain. The event will reach its finale at the end of the Experian Robin Hood Marathon on 11th September 2005, just in time to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this legendary event. To mark the 25th anniversary of this event, Daniel Brockhurst will be running 25 marathons in 25 days, the 25th day on the marathon course itself. The unique appeal of the 25-day challenge is that Dan will be continuing his normal life at work and at home while challenging himself to excel in his physical fitness throughout. The event will be a mixture of road runs and treadmill marathons at popular sights throughout London. Dan hopes that his visibility and endurance will help to raise awareness of AonA and the NDCS, helping to raise some money and promote their campaigns. Sport Against Addiction raises awareness of the positive effect sport can play in helping people overcome their addictions or prevent them from becoming addicted in the first place. Sport Against Addiction is proud to be chosen by Dan to take part in the highs and lows of his 25-day journey. NDCS is the only UK charity solely dedicated to supporting deaf children and young people, their families and professionals working with them. Two babies are born deaf everyday and 90% are born to hearing families with little experience of deafness. Where? A full list of run locations will be available within the next seven days. Press releases and website updates will keep followers informed during the build-up and throughout the challenge itself.
