Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association as my dad was diagnosed with MND early in 2009.
Motor Neurone Diseases (MND) are a group of neurological disorders that selectively affect motor neurones, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, breathing, swallowing and general movement of the body.
Currently there is no cure for MND.
Your donation will help to provide the essential services people with MND rely on, and fund research projects to bring hope for a future without the disease.
About 90% of cases of MND are "sporadic", meaning that the patient has no family history of MND and the case appears to have occurred with no known cause - which means anyone can develop it.
Symptoms usually present themselves between the ages of 50-70, and include progressive weakness, muscle wasting, and muscle fasiculations, spasticity or stiffness in the arms and legs, and overactive tendon reflexes. Patients may present with symptoms as diverse as a dragging foot, unilateral muscle wasting in the hands, or slurred speech.
Most cases of MND progress quite quickly, with noticeable decline occurring over the course of months. Although symptoms may present in one region, they will typically spread. If restricted to one side of the body they are more likely to progress to the same region on the other side of the body before progressing to a new region. After several years, most patients require help to carry out activities of daily living such as self care, feeding, and transportation.
