CURE works to improve the lives of children with treatable disabilities through specialised surgical and compassionate care. Through our eight paediatric teaching hospitals in underserved countries, we provide free corrective care, as well as training for local healthcare workers to do the same.

Story

Hello all

I am raising money for Cure International to support doctor traning programmes in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Last year we has a seminar at work describing obstetric work being carried out in Afghanistan by Dr Jacqui Hill (previously a fellow here at the MRC Southampton). Maternal mortality rate in Afghanistan is about 6500 per 100,000 live births (UK 10 per 100,000). Jacqui and her team at the Cure International Hospital, Kabul have instituted an Obstetric and Gynaecology and family medicine training and teaching  programme to qualify Afghan doctors. It is envisaged that this knowledge can then be passed on to others and into rural areas of the country where there is a lack of competent medical practitioners.

It costs approximately £6000 to train one doctor. So far the MRC in Southhampton has raised half of this. Fundraising activities are obviously ongoing.

I ran the London Half Marathon on 5th Oct (2hrs 13 mins) and will be running The Great South on  26th Oct.

Thank you for your support.
