Flora London Marathon 2005 · 17 April 2005 ·

Afghanaid is a British humanitarian and development organisation. For forty years, our dedicated personnel have worked with millions of families in some of the poorest regions in Afghanistan to provide basic services and help communities adapt to climate change and natural disasters.

Story

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On April 17 I will - for better or for worse - run the London Marathon in aid of Afghanaid, a charity devoted to helping the people of Afghanistan.

The plight of Afghanistan does not need much explanation: a country devastated by war, ethnic and religious conflict, droughts and a predilection to be mixed up with the wrong people at the wrong time. There are few countries in the world who can say that they have not contributed to Afghanistan's misery. While far from a perfect society, Afghanistan today is a more promising place for many of its inhabitants. This is particularly true for Afghani women, who, once the most educated female population in the region, lived for years in social isolation and under complete suppression of their freedoms by the Taliban. Every penny donated helps to make today's Afghanistan a better, wealthier and juster place and redress the terrible political, social and cultural crimes that have been committed over the last fifty years by and in the name of ideology, faith and politics.

Please give generously. Your money will be well spent.

Many thanks,

Juliane
