Thanks for taking the time to visit the St Luke's Run the Shops 2012 JustGiving page.
London 2012 is fast approaching, and to celebrate this special occasion, a team of volunteer runners from the community served by St Luke's Hospice Plymouth, are running in relay around the 34 hospice shops in Devon and Cornwall.
The event will commence on Thursday 26 April 2012, and finish on Saturday 28 April 2012 at the Drake shop in Plymouth City Centre. The route covers approxiamately 130 miles. After leaving the Hospice at Turnchapel, the runners visit the South Hams area travelling as far as Kingsbridge. The relay then returns via South Brent and Ivybridge to Plympton on day one. Day two will take in Tavistock, Launceston, Callington and Saltash. The final day will concentrate on the shops in and around the city of Plymouth, plus Torpoint via the ferry.
St Luke's Hospice covers the area including Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall, and in conjunction with the Community Services, provides care for 3200 patients each year.
The in-patient unit at Turnchapel consists of 20 beds. The average cost per patient per day is currently £525, OR, £9 a minute! This means that the Hospice costs more than £6 million each year to run. £4.5 million must be raised from the local community each year to remain open.
St Luke's is a registered charity and no charge is ever made for any of the care given. Help is given in many ways, and the aim of the hospice is to provide practical, social, emotional and spiritual support to the patients, and their carers.
