So I made it to the top and back in one piece. What an experience. thank you all to those who have supported me through these last 9 months. But there is still time to donate. I will be keeping this page open for a while yet. So please please dig deep. every little helps.
Im slowly updating my blog page with all the goings on of the trip. you can read all about it at www.ruth-climbs-kili.blogspot.com
Hi all, thanks for visiting my just giving page. my name
is Ruth Mackenzie and I’m planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, in October to
fundraise for the Leanne Fund and also to raise awarness for Cystic Fibrosis. You can now also follow how im getting on by going to my blog at www.ruth-climbs-kili.blogspot.com
The Leanne Fund was set up in 2009 in memory of Leanne Mitchell who sadly passed away last year of Cystic Fibrosis. I only got to know Leanne for about 8 months before she passed away but she has left a lasting effect on my life. She was such a strong young lady with so much love to give. One of the things I loved the most about Leanne was that she never left CF define her. I started thinking about climbing Kilimanjaro over a year ago and my plan was always to fundraise for a charity associated with CF. So when the Leanne fund was launched it seemed like the perfect charity to get behind.
' The Leanne Fund ' is a charity which provides funding for special treats for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers in the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland.Living with CF, a life threatening illness, impacts daily on the lives of sufferers and their families.
The Leanne Fund offers a unique opportunity for CF patients and carers to be treated to something special or to do something really special - a chance to create happy memories.
A bit about the trek
Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s
highest, free standing mountain and Africa’s highest mountain at a height of 5895 m/19340 ft. I will be going out on my
own to join a group of about 30, accompanied by a trek leader and a medic. The trek last for 10 days. This trek is highly demanding physically and
mentally especially in the couple of days before summit day, where altitude
sickness could set in. If I am affected
by altitude sickness there is a chance I may not make it to the top. However it is only in extreme cases of
altitude sickness that they take you off the mountain.
In order to get fit for the trek I have a very strict training schedule I have to follow. I do an hour and a half in the gym 3 times a week working on my cardio and muscle building. Doing other sports like running and swimming to build up a good general fitness. But the best thing I can do is get out walking hills. I’ve got a few hill days under my belt now. I spent some time walking on the mainland where I completed my first 2 Munros. I have a lot still to do but I’m making good progress. And I have a great team of friends behind me helping me all the way.
So please please get behind me and donate what you can. I'm self funding the trip so all moneys raised will be going straight to The Leanne Fund. I understand times are hard at the moment, but every little helps.
Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my page. I will be making updates with all my latest progress. For more information on The Leanne Fund please go to www.theleannefund.co.uk
