Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Help For Heroes has become a charity very close to our hearts after one of our best friends Nick was very seriously injured after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan in October. He lost both of his legs, broke his pelvis and suffered further complications internally. During his time at Selly Oak and now at Headley Court, Nick has been assisted by the incredible work of Help For Heroes. H4H provides returning injured servicemen and women with the immense support they deserve, for example through the excellent rehabilitation facilities at Headley Court and through the funding of state of the art prosthetic limbs.

THE TASK!  Climbing Kilimanjaro - 2nd August to 8th August 2010

We are flying out to Nairobi and taking the 8 hour bus across the border into Tanzania to Moshi at the base of Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro is a volcano just shy of 6000m, the tallest free standing mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa. Over 6 days Phil, Mark, Bob, Abbe and myself will climb from savanna to rainforest to semi-desert, alpine desert and finally to stone scree and the ice-capped summit with temperatures dipping to -20 degrees C - we're even camping along the way. That's got to be worth a donation! All the training in the world however doesn't necessarily mean we'll be lucky enough to reach the summit - altitude sickness will be our biggest challenge. Your donation is therefore based on us getting as high as we can. Our guide will have ultimate control over whether we're allowed to summit, depending on how our bodies react to the altitude.

So please dig deep and donate - every donation, no matter how much, will help to make a big difference to Nick and other servicemen and women who are now faced with the huge challenge of learning to walk again.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Thank you so much in advance,

Claire, Phil, Mark, Bob and Abbe

This trip is completely self-funded - no donations will be put towards the cost of it. All money raised goes directly to Help for Heroes.
