Ovarian Cancer Action is the leading ovarian cancer charity in the UK. Ovarian Cancer Action funds research into ovarian cancer, raises awareness of the disease and gives a voice to women affected by it. Ovarian cancer kills 12 women a day in the UK, and survival rates are low at 40%, compared to 80% for breast cancer. We urgently need to raise £10million for the new Ovarian Cancer Action research centre, at Imperial College London – the UK’s first ever research facility entirely dedicated to ovarian cancer. Thanks to a large increase in research spending on breast cancer, survival rates have increased by over 20% in the last decade. Ovarian Cancer Action believes that, with the same input, we can make a similar impact on ovarian cancer.
My inspiration for my journey was the loss of my friend and neighbour Sally, whose life was tragically cut short by ovarian cancer. Sally was only a few years older than me, and I thought that if I was going to take on this challenge, I needed to get on with it. I have always had a list of things to do and this was one of my most demanding challenges.
On Sunday 7th June I completed my ride from John O'Groats to Lands End. A total distance of 1041 miles taking 88 hours of pedaling. I was greeted at the end by Micheal, Peter and Christie (and not forgetting Rocco!) which was a wonderful end to an epic journey. The support and words of encouragement from all of you have kept me going and will remain with me always. We raised a glass to Sally in Lands End as promised. She will live on in my memory just as the experience of the past 2 weeks will remain with me forever.
Thank you one and all for helping me make this such a positive experience from such a sad loss.
