Story

Update 10/10/09: Right, got a route. Need to strip out my luggage and throw away anything which is "too excessive" in the weight department (last weekend I nearly killed myself dragging too much along), and buy my train ticket.

Worked out my route, taking the (hopefully conservative) target of 80 miles a day, here's my overnight stops... (17th) John O'Groats (18th) Crask Inn (19th) Lewiston (20th) Altnafeadh (21st) Balloch (22nd) Ecclefechan (23rd) Bootle (24th) Eccleston (25th) Llanrwst (26th) Llanidloes (27th) Abergavenny (28th) Glastonbury (29th) Bideford (30th) Newquay (31st) Lands End.

Update 9/9/9: What a date for giving commiserations to Joe, who got from Lands End to Fort William before some crazy gave him a head on while overtaking. He's ok, but convalescing in hospital with a broken femur and some pretty nasty cuts. GET WELL SOON!

--

Update 6/9/9: So my training has been going rather painfully so far, with 103, 78 and 73 mile practice runs so far. On the day I'm doing 100 miles every day for 11 days - definitely in need of extra vaseline.

--

Update 1/9/9: The dates are now confirmed (thanks David and Claire) as 17 October-01 November. Daylight will be a little short :-( but sleepy time is up :-) As long as I get to recharge my awesome headlight all will be OK.

Hello everybody.

As you know, I've had this crazy idea to cycle from John O'Groats to Lands End for a while, and now I'm finally going to make it happen. 1,000+ miles unsupported, carrying everything I need to live and camp on the way. Just me, my bike, my luggage, and my anti-chaffing cream!

I'm also looking to detour past Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowdon en route, adding more than 100 miles of VERY hilly terrain, just for fun. If I can find someone to watch my bike, I may well head up and down the three of them to make for a JOG-LE + 3 peaks challenge.

622 VGS charity for 2009 is the RAF Benevolent Fund, and this journey is part of our overall effort, so forward it on to all members, family and friends of 622 VGS and encourage everyone you know to contribute to the 622 effort. I'm 100% funding this myself so all your money goes to the RAF Benevolent Fund - please give generously :-)
