Story
Well, the time has come for me to look for another challenge to test body and mind and this year I have decided to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
It has been 2 years since the jungle in Borneo and I promised myself I would try to find a challenge to at least match the knee deep mud and blood sucking leaches.
At just under 19500ft (5900m), Kilimanjaro is the highest free standing mountain in the world. As mountaineering goes, this is not a technically difficult climb, however, at heights above 9500ft, the greatest obstacle is altitude sickness. Starting off with light symptoms including headaches, nausea and light-headedness to more serious symptoms including disorientation, hallucination and in rare cases, death.
But then again, if it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing.
While I’m on the subject of worthwhile, I have decided to raise money for charity through sponsorships and donations.
Get Connected is a free helpline service for young people in need. The helpline workers are specially trained to support these young people with their unique situation and then put them in touch with the best service to help solve their problems. Crucially, the connection they make between each young person and the chosen source of help is free and thus Get Connected relies entirely on donations and fund raising.
Please note, all moneys donated will go directly to the charity as the cost of the climb has come from my own pocket.
If you are a UK taxpayer, please select the corresponding option as the UK government will give 28% back in gift aid on top of your donation. Every little bit helps!
Thanks for reading and please give generously. I will post some pics from the top of Africa on my return.
Wish me luck!
Ryan
