In January 2010 I will go to South Africa to work for SPW, a highly reputable charity delivering a community development project.
Working for Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW), I will be trained to serve as an International Volunteer Peer Educator. Placed in the Eastern Cape of South Africa I will live in a rural Xhosa community for 8 months helping to empower other young people to take positive control of their own health and life decisions. In particular, I will be using non-formal education methods to promote good sexual and reproductive health in the midst of the HIV/AIDS pandemic that affects millions of young South Africans.
But I can't do this without your support! As an international volunteer I am required to raise £3,500 for SPW by December 2009. Whilst I'm saving every penny I can, I am also relying on the donations of you wonderful, generous people!
The money raised will contribute to the training of many young South Africans to work with SPW as national Volunteer Peer Educators ensuring the projects are sustainable and are specific to the needs of the community. I will be partnered with a volunteer from a Xhosa community and, working together, we will assess what is needed in our local area and plan our development strategy. Living with my partner in a Xhosa round house I will be making great efforts to learn the Xhosa language, clicks and all!
Having written my dissertation on HIV/AIDS prevention in South Africa and since researched many HIV prevention charities I have found that SPW uses very effective techniques to tackle the root causes of the fast spreading HIV/AIDS epidemic. Their projects intergrate sexual health education with youth empowerment and livelihood opportunities promoting positive behaviours and reducing the spread of the epidemic. Also, SPW South Africa targets young people in rural areas especially the very vulnerable, such as those who don't go to school.
SPW are cited as an example of best practice by UNICEF, UNAIDS, and the World Bank for their unique methodology. For more information on Student Partnerships Worldwide please visit http://www.spw.org or take a look at this short film http://www.gumboots.tv/works/NGO_SPW_2009.html
