The Marathon des Sables (MDS) is a
152 mile race across the
Sahara desert ran over 6 days. Starting gun goes on approximately the 04-04-2010 & scheduled finish is 10-04-2010!.
The race is split into 15, 21,
25, 52, 26, and 13 mile sections. This is equivalent to five and a half regular marathons,
& explains why the MDS is affectionately labeled
‘the toughest footrace on earth’.
In addition to hauling your own carcass each competitor must
carry everything
they will need for the duration on their backs (food, medical kit, sleeping
bag, etc etc etc). Mid-day temperatures during the race range between
35’C – 40’C,
20% of the distance being is run on
dunes the remainder on
rocky, stony &
sand.
Here's some great pictures of the 2008 MDS by
Mark Gillett;Oh, & a video of the
terrifying camel spider, which legend tells consumes at least one competitor per year.
Also a
french video, the pictures show the difficult terrain, the words, i'm not so sure about!
The MDS requires a good level of physical fitness but more significant
is a participant’s ability to cope with the mental stamina required. It’s very
difficult to train yourself to be tough in the unique circumstances the MDS presents;
however what does help is money…. So here’s the thing; we (Rob Coker & Lee
Booth) are using the event to raise some money for charity. We’re running for
two charities, the
Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA) (all offline money) and
The Bobby
Moore Cancer Fund (all online money) (see below).
Already, thanks to the Bobby Moore Pavillion Ball @ Ascot racecourse
we have received some very generous donations. It would be great too if you could give some money to charity & encouragement to us.
Cheers,
Lee & Rob
PS; The race will be documented on our blog -
