The charity helps to reduce extreme poverty in the rural areas by increasing the productivity of working horses and donkeys through welfare and management training. It provides basic veterinary assistance, teaches in schools and to farmers groups, and provides scholarships for paravets at college level.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! On the 4th November I will be returning to Sambel Kunda in The Gambia to do some voluntary work for a charity I have been supporting for some time. As a result, I am raising awareness and funds for them before I go.  Poverty in Africa is a massive problem, and The Gambia is no exception, however rather than just using funds to buy food for families, the chairty I support helps to alleviate poverty in rural areas through education and by loaning working animals (namely horses and donkeys) to families so that they can increase their crop output and income.  In the areas the charity has been working in, some African families have already seen a 500% increase in their income, and this has made a massive difference to their lives.

During my visit I will be helping to educate horse and donkey owners on the welfare of their animals and teach them how to get the best work out of them. Many Gambian people are dependant on horses and donkeys for their livelihood, whether it be for ploughing farmland, providing taxi services, or merely getting from one place to another. If a horse or donkey falls sick or becomes injured, the family income may stop altogether, so it is important that they know how to take good care of the animals and that they have access to basic first aid information and equipment.

The charity also invests in other projects within the Gambian communities, and has asssited with the building of a Medical centre, and has also provided equipment to schools.

Please give as little or much as you wish, every donation no matter how small is greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,

Sally
