AbleChildAfrica exists to improve the lives of the estimated 50m children and young people who are living with disability in Africa. We do this by supporting partner organisations to carry out life changing work with them. We think disabled children and disabled young people should be allowed to decide what changes they would like to see, so we make sure that the organisations which we work with actively involve disabled children and young people in their decision making. We have been working in East Africa for the past twenty years and during that time have affected the lives of over 250,000 disabled children and young people. We are currently working in Uganda and Kenya and hope to expand our work to other African countries in the future. The programmes we run include rehabilitative healthcare, inclusive education, parents support groups, children's after school clubs and campaigning work which seeks the full inclusion of disabled children and disabled young people in policy and practice everywhere we work.

My story

Many years ago whilst watching the London Marathon from a very safe distance, ie, lounging on the sofa in front of the TV, having just stuffed my face with a fry up!, I made a promise to my Mum and Dad that I knew would one day come back to haunt me...

"I can do that!...I'll run the London Marathon one year, and raise money for children in Africa, I promise!"....
I said, in my typical arrogant way, blissfully unaware of the reality of the challenge and the commitment required to complete the hours of running I would have to endure in preparation. A typical example of my mouth writing cheques my body can't cash!

For years now I have managed to avoid stepping up to the challenge, with typical excuses like -

"I just didn’t have the time, work's been so hectic this year!", or
"It's so annoying, I applied but didn't get a place" (Hhhmmm), and the old classic...."Right that's it, I start training tomorrow and will definitely run it next year!"

Well no excuses this year!, believe it or not I have finally stepped up to the challenge. I am running the London Marathon 2009.
Mainly to keep the promise I made all those years ago and achieve a long time personal goal, but more importantly, to raise money for a great cause that helps disabled children all over East Africa.

In an equal moment of insanity, my sister Sara, has also stepped up to the challenge, and will be running the London Marathon 2009 alongside me. So please check out her page. She will also be running for AbleChildAfrica. http://www.justgiving.com/sarabirru
