My story

DAFA (Direct Aid For Africa) supports underprivileged children in Africa so that they have the opportunity of obtaining an education and therefore are given a chance in life, one I believe everyone deserves. DAFA operates predominantly in Zambia, a country 36 times the size of Wales but one that has been utterly blighted by poverty and the impact of AIDS. Schools are supported with necessary resources such as books, classroom furniture and even computers to give them the best education possible. The food provided at some schools can be the only meal the children, most of whom are orphans, receive all day.

DAFA is especially close to my heart in that it was founded by professional gambler and trainer Barney Curley when he realised that after taking considerable sums of money off the bookmakers, he wanted to find a way of putting his life into persective by 'giving a little back', a phrase he used as a title for his compelling autobiography.

Barney remains the driving force behind the charity and is supported by a committee of six individual members who are chiefly involved in the day-to-day management and organisation of the charity. Committee meetings take place regularly and members visit Zambia frequently, at their own expense.

Every penny of every pound donated to DAFA is put where it is needed with those who help administer the charity or are involved in facilitating any of its projects doing so entirely at their own expense. DAFA works predominantly in Zambia through a range of projects focusing on health care, education and self-help.
