Kilimanjaro Trek - Beat · 20 May 2008

Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

I am paying for this trip myself so 100% of the money raised goes to Beat.

A few years ago i was thinking through my "life list" and one of the things near the top was to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. In September (at last!) I will be flying out to Africa ready to take on the challenge of summiting the giant that is Kili.

It seems like a perfect opportunity to raise some money for the eating disorder charity Beat, which is a cause very close to my heart... so that's exactly what i'll be doing in the upcoming months!

Eating disorders are widely misunderstood and treatment and support is ridiculously underfunded.  Without treatment and a lot of support i couldnt have got as far as i have today.  Beat aims to provide information for sufferers, increase knowledge and awareness, and also to campaign for standards and availability of treatment.  They also provide incredible self help and support groups for both sufferers and carers.

It is believed that there are over A MILLION people in the UK alone with diagnosed and undiagnosed eating disorders.  The scary statistic is that 10% with serious disorders will die as a direct result of their illness.  These illnesses ruin lives, its as simple as that.

PLEASE help me to raise some money so that i can give back a little of what i have recieved!

£100 allows a Beat ambassador to talk about and raise awareness of eating disorders in the national media

£200 enables Beat to train a helpline worker

£500 will help Beat to set up two self help groups to provide support and advice to both sufferers and their families

£1000 will allow Beat to set up a training event for volunteers or can be used to expand research into eating disorders, their causes and ways to potentially prevent them.

I have a group on facebook with various information about my experience and why i am doing this http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10111941725

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Beat will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
