Our baby, Owen, was diagnosed as profoundly deaf at nine weeks old. As you can imagine this came as quite a shock and we had a lot of questions, ranging from the scientific - how does the ear work, what part of our baby's ear is not working correctly, how do the various different hearing devices work; to developmental issues, how can we communicate with our baby, what special requirements will he have, what options does he have?

Through our teacher of the deaf we were quickly put in touch with the NDCS who have been a really valuable source of information and support, with useful leaflets on their website and a raft of events to support families like us who are just beginning to understand what Owen's future holds in store. Through the NDCS we will be attending a weekend away for families with a newly diagnosed deaf child, have been put in touch with other families with deaf children in our area, are attending a family signing course and Christmas events.

In addition, the NDCS runs activities and events where deaf children can learn new skills, gain confidence and meet other deaf children. Deaf children are often vulnerable to bullying, low self esteem and isolation and the NDCS gives children the opportunity to take part in activities they are often excluded from and provide support, guidance and forums for them to chat with other deaf children.
