Story

Hi Everyone! So this fundraising occasion was born out of two events in my life: my upcoming college graduation, and my acceptance into a Masters program. As many of you know, I spent my spring 2010 semester in Nepal. During that journey I learned more about myself, the world, and human beings than I had in my whole 20 years prior. In the semester I visited a place that truly wowed me--the Helambu region of Nepal. There, I visited a village school, stayed at guest houses with families, and witnessed people who were truly appreciative of everything. Through out the semester as I went days without electricity, limited water, walked sometimes up to 6 hours to get from one place to another, and saw a different side of life, I learned things that I will never forget. Most irrevocably, I learned that my educational opportunity (no matter how much financial damage it did to my family) was truly a gift, and I should embrace every bit of it, and be forever grateful. After I returned, I took 6 classes in semesters where I didn't have to, spent hours at the library just because, and continued my 3 work study jobs and volunteer positions-- simply in rememberance of all the people I met, who would walk 15 miles to get to a library, who made a living carrying others' bags across mountain passes, and who would never make enough money to leave their village, merely because of-- where they were born. The enthusiastic children I encountered would do anything for somone to "teach them," and I have truly enjoyed learning from such wonderful people. I have not only entirely simplified my life, but have dedicated my further education to understanding cultural perspectives and educational opportunities. I wish simply to spread the knowledge I gain in a way that is liberating and opportune for people who will not have an opportunity as I have. Therefore, before I head to Harvard in the Fall, I will be spending my summer in Nepal, and up to a month volunteering directly in the village (depending on monsoon season), either teaching, or helping with construction projects. I am thrilled to have this oppournity to give back before I start a new chapter in my life, and I would love for you to be a part of my experience. Thank you for helping me with what I am passionate about, and I truly could not do this without your support!

---- Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and entirely secure. Once you donate, all of your money is sent directly to the charity, so it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, while saving time and cutting costs for the charity. So please help support my cause, and know that it will be especially rewarding, to be over there and see the direct use and benefits of your donations, and I will keep photos/a blog to keep everyone updated!!! Thank you!!!
