Kawasaki disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the UK and the western world. It's time we changed that. We have an enormous task to do. But we are going to do it. TOGETHER we will. Join us and help us protect tiny hearts. You can make a difference. Awareness of this often pernicious disease is currently poor. Slow diagnosis and delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease can cause serious, life-long health issues. Children affected by Kawasaki Disease have excellent chances of a good recovery with timely diagnosis and the correct treatment. At Societi we know that recognising Kawasaki Disease early is THE transformational opportunity to prevent what can be devastating effects from Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease has lots of symptoms in common with other childhood illnesses so it is often misdiagnosed - this means lifelong heart damage for too many children. Each year in the UK there are more cases of Kawasaki Disease than bacterial meningitis! Everyone would spot meningitis and know what to do, because of brilliant awareness raising work by MRT. We need everyone to recognise Kawasaki Disease too.

Last August my grandson was unwell. He was in hospital for a week, and treated with antibiotics for suspected pneumonia. He was then discharged home. His parents knew things were not right, but it was only when he became very unwell and had to be taken back to hospital that my daughter in law was able to insist on a heart scan.

Neil had lesions in his heart. Kawasaki was then diagnosed and confirmed by a follow up appointment with the cardiologist, at just 6 months old, the youngest case he had known. Please read the info. on Kawasaki: we did and things did not look good. Our grandson had not had the initial treatment for this form of acquired heart disease and so had to start taking daily aspirin as the cardiologist suspected the lesions might have spread to the coronary arteries.

Thankfully they have not spread but have been shrinking over the months. Neil is now thriving and off all medication. He is now the happiest toddler imaginable. We are so lucky, but earlier diagnosis would have saved a lot of anxiety.

Please (particularly if you work in the health field) take the time to read up on the symptoms. If the right treatment is given immediately the chances of recovery for all is much greater. Not all children have been as fortunate as Neil.
