My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am in Peru at the moment for my medical elective and I would like to raise money for a charity called Womankind World wide that works to support woman in peru.

Women in Peru:

In Peruvian society abuse and descrimnation against women still exists.

- It has been reported that 51% of women in greater Lima and 68.9% of women in Cusco have been sexually abused by their partners.  A law was passed in 1993 to protect women against domestic violence, however cases of domestic violence rarely reach the courts.

- Women do not always have equal access to education.

- Women tend to have less responsible jobs and are often paid less than men.

- Women are underrepresented in politics.

Why womankind:
For 20 years WOMANKIND Worldwide has helped women in developing countries - who have been silenced or isolated by harmful traditions, conflict, violence and intimidation or the sheer exhaustion of surviving in poverty - to have a distinctive say in what goes on in their family, community and country.

Woman kind´s aim is to help women achieve change:

1) They help courageous individuals to challenge the status quo
In some countries, this could involve accompanying a girl to a village meeting so she can tell women and men that it is now against the law for a girl to be forced to marry a man after he has raped her, and encourage girls to see they do have a choice.

2) They help women get organised
In many different ways, they help women come together, often for the first time, to talk about what they want to change, and then we help them achieve it. This could involve reading and writing lessons or training to resolve conflicts, so women are better able to get involved with whats going on in their community.

3) They help women claim their rights and secure new ones
They might provide legal help to enable a woman to obtain a divorce from a man who beats her, or work with the police to encourage them to help women rather than return them to their husbands.

Woman kind in Peru:

The programme in Peru has focused on:

Economic rights and equal opportunities in employment

Violence against women and sexual & reproductive rights

Political participation

  • Human rights awareness

The programme is making excellent progress:

  • In the communities of Ica, San Martin and La Libertad:
  • - local women have succeeded in getting their agenda incorporated into their regional governmental policy. This includes the inclusion of women’s economic rights in three regional plans for equal opportunities.
    • - Two Social Watch Committees monitor the regional plans in La Libertad and Ica Women leaders in San Martin can write proposals reflecting local women's concerns.
  • - Political participation is increasing fast in San Martin - a woman was elected to the provincial council and others ran in local elections.
  • - Media reporting of women's issues is much fairer - and the terminology has improved.
  •

    The challenge- Machu Pichu:

I would therefore like you to sponcer me to climb Machu Pichu to help Womankind carry out this and other work.

Machu Pichu is an Inca site located 2,430 metres (8,000 ft) above sea level. It is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 80 kilometres (50 m) northwest of Cuzco. Machu Picchu is often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas". The Incas started building it around AD 1430 but was abandoned as an official site for the Inca rulers a hundred years later at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Since it was not plundered by the Spanish when they conquered the Incas, it is especially important as a cultural site and is considered a sacred place.

I will be climbing the Salkantay inca trail up to Machu Picchu. This trail takes 5 days and 4 nights. I will be walking between 5 and 9 hours a day, and most of this will be up incredibly steep hills!
