We build classrooms and medical facilities to give Kenyan children a better life

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Next summer i am taking part in the Footsteps Rafiki Project 2010 in Kenya. It is a trip with 16 volenteers from Headington School and St Edwards School in Oxford. The project works with children who are often heavily burdened from a very early age. As the adult population has been devastated by Aids many of the children have taken on the role of parent, heading up families, trying to feed and cloth other siblings as well as trying to attend school.

The Footsteps Rafiki Programmes are aimed at broadening the experience of the children in the communities we work with; bringing some fun and play into their lives. This is done by introducing them to sports and arts and creating the opportunity to meet new people and gain some understanding of the world outside their village.

The aim of the Rafiki Project 2010 is to build a new classroom for the children which will help to inprove their learning conditions. I am very excitied to be a part of this and i know that it will be very rewarding to know that i helped to build the new building for the children to use.

I know that it will be an amazing and rewarding experience and i am looking forward to putting my heart and soul into every activity that i will do out there. I understand that it will be physically draining but the end results will be worth it. I would love to be able to give the children in better opportunities for their education and give them a better quality of life. I feel that we, in MEDC’s are given all these opportunities and can take what we have for granted. After watching the video I can see that the children are much less fortunate than ourselves and are so excited about the work that Footsteps can do for them. I know that they appreciate every little thing that we can do for them and it can help to change the lives of the children dramatically. I would love to help bring the smiles to their faces and to know that I have helped towards giving something to the community  and helping to develop the education for people less fortunate than myself.

The trip will take place on 23rd July- 1st August 2010 and in order to go on the trip i need to raise £1,400. I am planning to hold different events such as school discos, tuck shops and car boot sales etc. I am also going to enter a 5km run as this is how far the children had to walk to get fresh, clean water each day before the charity got involved and provided the school with a clean supply of water.

I would very much appreciate any donation and am looking forward to my incredible experience next summer. For more information on Footsteps and their projects visit: http://www.footstepsuk.org/index.htm
