I visited Sri Lanka in December 2007, three years after the Tsunami that claimed the lives of over 35,000 Sri Lankans, and displaced over 440,000. 

We met people who had had their homes completely destroyed, and were living under pieces of corrugated plastic, propped against trees.  Despite still suffering the after effects of a natural disaster, and an ongoing civil war, the people of Sri Lanka remained humblingly welcoming, and made our stay one to remember for many reasons.
