Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now! In 1996 my husband Ed and Johnny Beveridge met Mike Hearn in Namibia on a their circumnavigation of Africa in a single engined aircraft, and supported this cause through PACT; a conservation trust they set up on the back of their trip. They were deepIy touched by what Mike and his team were doing. Mike spent 12 years of his early life devoted to this cause, but died in a tragic accident in 2005. I am now returning to Namibia to do my bit. Our challenge is to cycle 350 Kms in seven days through the Namibian Desert in aid of this cause; visiting many areas to which Mike dedicated his effort. These rhinos are on the brink of extinction because of loss of habitat and poaching for their horns (for two reasons only - to make handles for ornamental daggers and as a Far Eastern remedy to reduce fever). Three out of the five species of Rhino are critically endangered. By saving these rhinos, we also help save many other species and the incredible landscape they inhabit. This project operates outside National Parks which makes its existance much more fragile, and funding has to rely on non governmental funding. For many years Mike fostered the concept of the balance between the needs of wildlife and indigenous communities where both benefit equally. This is the point of our trip and all funds will go towards his his vision for this. From this bike ride David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) will also be building an Education and Information Centre in support of the tribal communities. Please do what you can for this great cause. Thank you so much.
